Review: Basil and Oregano

Review: Basil and Oregano

Basil and Oregano by Melissa Capriglione with two girls walking through the town with a cute tomato red doggo between themAn adorable and fun magical story about baking, love, friendship, and more! Loved it!

✨ First up the cover! That is what pulled me in the first bit, I just love how cute and fun it looks and how you can immediately see that these two girls need to get together.
✨ The art! It was just so much fun, I love the style, the character designs are perfect. Plus, I loved seeing various dishes in the chapter pages. YUM! I have just had lunch, but I got very hungry.
✨ The diversity/rep. We got a non-binary character, a trans character, Basil and Oregano are gay (either bi or lesbian), Basil has two dads who love each other a lot (to the embarrassment of Basil, haha). One of the teachers is religious and wears a hijab + eats her food halal (which I loved that it was a requirement for the class to have all the food be halal).
✨ The fact it takes place at a boarding school. Everyone knows, I guess give how much I fangirl about it, that I love boarding school stories.
✨ Mental health time! We see that Basil isn’t having the easiest year throughout the book with the finals, the top student she needs to keep, scholarships, and more. At one point, my heart so broke when I saw her like that, Basil just slips. I am glad that she found help and someone to help.
✨ The baking! OMG! I love the baking! Both the magical and non-magical ones. Though most is magical and I just love the idea of thinking about a recipe, getting all the ingredients, and swirl it together with magic. I love baking, but the time it takes, this would be just perfect. I love how the artist shows us the wonderful magic that goes into it.
✨ I love the town the school is in, see the little restaurants, the gorgeous houses, the squares. Plus, the school itself? Loved how that one looked. Wish I could visit it for real!
✨ Oregano and Basil. Who should be together just for their names, haha. But also fall for each other hard. From the start they are both interested in each other and I could see why. The chemistry/the hearts were around them immediately and I found myself rooting for these two to start dating and get together. It won’t be easy because Basil has her reasons to get top spot, and Oregano also has hers. I could definitely understand why there was tension because Oregano is technically rich and Basil is not. She needs that top spot. For her it is a necessity.
✨ The familiars. I was at first afraid that they may talk or be able to do stuff, but they are just animals. Thank the lord. I am not one to like talking familiars as they often have way too much attitude/are too annoying. So yeah for non-talking familiars. I loved seeing what each one got and Tomato was just the gosh darn cutest thing. Can I have a Tomato? Or a Daisy? Or that ray the girl at the restaurant has? I would love it!
✨ The truth about Oregano. I gasped! But I was also happy that she confided in Basil early on. Didn’t let that be a secret. I was definitely rooting for Oregano (I was already rooting for her but at that point even more), hoping that she would be able to speak up against her mom. Tell her her wishes. I can tell you that things get said and done and I was absolutely delighted with how it was handled. I was cheering, and maybe crying a bit.
✨ The two side characters, Addy and Villy. They were just the cutest!
✨ While I wanted to yeet some things at first, I am glad with the ending (go students) and how certain things like scholarships/top students will be handled now.
✨ The epilogue! OMG that was just the cutest. Thank you to the author/artist!

😡 flips a table I could do without bullies in stories. I don’t mind competition but Xynthia was just a disgusting human being and I just hated each time she appeared in the book. Slime creepy girl who needs to fuck off. But of course she had her reasons. Oh, boohoohoo. rolls eyes Can we just fuck of with that trope and then forgiveness and all that? Can we just have one person who says Fuck you and just leaves the bully standing? Not caring about the reasons or forgiveness. I have been bullied terribly and if a bully came to me with a sobstory I would probably turn away or just slap them (I am not a violent person, but holy shit after all I went through…).

All in all, despite that bully that ruined bits for me, I loved this story. The baking, the magic, the classes, the characters, the romance. LOVE. I would recommend this one!
