Review: Berry the Polar Bear
I received this book from the publisher (Earnshaw Books) in exchange of an honest review.
Before I start my review, I want to let you all know that book was written/created by a girl named Serena Gu who is 13 years old and lives in Nanjing! 13 years old! And already getting a book published! I love it. So of course I had to read the book.
In this adorable book we meet a polar bear named Berry who loves loves snow. Well, in the place he is in he is in the right spot, snow all around! We see Berry having a great time just frolicking around, eating snow (as you can see on the cover). But then he meets a penguin who has been lost. Well, yeah, of course the penguin is lost, he is in the totally wrong part of the world, haha. But apparently the penguin’s colony is now where the polar bears are, and you know, I didn’t mind that at all. I have read plenty of books that mix up animals, plus I have to be honest I didn’t even think about it when reading, it was afterwards that I was like, wait penguins and polar bears wouldn’t meet. I was just having too much fun with the story to care.
Back to the story! The penguin is called Pea and he really wants to get home. I loved how Berry immediately accepted the quest to help Pea getting home. From then we get to see a sweet journey through the cold and snow to find Pea’s family. I was hoping that they would find them, I mean, the arctics are BIG. But I knew, since this is a picture book, we would have a happy ending one way or another so I was looking forward to things. And indeed, the ending was a happy one and I was so happy for Berry and Pea (and yes, you will have to read the book to see if they found Pea’s family or if there is another happy ending to be found).
The art was really cute, a bit wonky at times in the way of proportions on the animals, but I can forgive that since this is her first book and she is only 13 years old, there is still a lot of time to practice and get better. Plus, again, it was just so cute that even with it being wonky I still went AWWW!
I am definitely curious to see what Serena Gu will make next, I would love to read it if it is as adorable as this one~ I would recommend this one to everyone who loves cute books with unlikely friendships and a happy ending!
