Review: There’s Nothing Funny About Bums
I received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I really like Gareth P. Jones books and add to that Matt Robertson on illustrations? I just had to get this one. Plus, bums. It sounded like a silly and fun read, just what I wanted!
While I did enjoy this one, I had to re-read it again because the first read it felt disconnected. And after the second read, I can say it is a bit better, but I think because some illustrations are missing (like one of the kids is apparently drawing something on the whiteboard but all we see is the title and on the next page the teacher pointing to a seemingly empty board, later on the same happens with a sign and another girl drawing something on the board). Then there is the fact it goes from bums to farts to undies and to bums again. I just would have to like one thing, just bums for instance.
In this book the little kids have a giggle about bums. Every kid goes through a phase that bums, farts, and all that is just extremely funny and we indeed see that happening in this class. Some are openly laughing, others are blushing/shy, others are giggling. In the mean time we see the teacher try (with all her might) to stay serious and talk about these topics while the class is more and more dissolving into laughter and chaos, which had me laughing as well. Teacher, you are just making it worse. Haha. I loved that she had books and material all around perfect for this day, she was certainly prepared!
I love seeing the teacher go from super-serious to more and more trying not to laugh, that was such a nice touch!
The illustrations? That is where this book absolutely shines. The amount of detail, the colours, the fact you can keep finding fun little details on each page. It just added to the silliness of it all. Like how in the classroom you can find bum art. It was just so fun. Oh, and I liked how the fart were drawn and the sound effects they had.
All in all, while the story could be a bit more cohesive, it was a fun book and I had fun. I think kids will absolutely love this bum/fart/undie-tastic book.
