Review: Ursula Upside Down

Ursula Upside Down by Corey R. Tabor, catfish underwater and upside down with fishes and a shrimp looking at herAn adorable picture book about a little catfish who swims upside down!

I found this book at Library #4 and was instantly enamoured with the adorable cover! Not to mention the clever title. Since I already had quite a few books and only room for a few more and still a library to explore I decided to read the book right there and then. And I am glad I did and didn’t put the book back down for another time. Because this was so darn cute and had such a fun creative thing in the middle!

I didn’t even know that there were catfish who swam upside down! It took me quite a bit of searching (seriously, search engines these days are just horrific) but I found some more information about them. How fun and interesting to read more about these animals.

Meet Ursula. She is an adorable pink catfish who swims upside down! For her that is normal and so she swims with a happy heart in the warm waters of the place she lives in. We see her swim through the waters, eat a light snack (which had me laughing). But what happens when Ursula encounters animals who question if her upside down swimming is correct? What is right? What is up? What is down? The book creatively shows us what happens when Ursula is swimming what is, according to these animals, the right way. Things get quite exciting and maybe a tad terrifying at one point, thankfully this is a children’s book so everything is fine in the end. I won’t spoil what happens in the last few pages but I can tell you that I loved what the author/illustrator did there and what they showed. I loved seeing Ursula gain more confidence and I found myself rooting for the little fish.

The art was just so gorgeous, I love the colours and the designs of the animals (both aquatic and on land). It was as if I took a dive along with Ursula!

All in all, an inspiring and sweet read with a nice creative addition to make it even more fun. I would recommend this one to all!
