Mid-Year Book Horror Book Tag 2025 Edition

Greetings all! BOO!

Idolmaster two girls in pumpkin heads and holding a basket doing trick or treat

A happy welcome to a new sort of Mid-Year Book Tag! Today for Spooktober I am doing the Mid-Year Horror Book Tag!

Yes, it is a bit later than usual, my blog was just all full, so I thought I would do it during Spooktober. Next year you can expect this one to be posted during Summerween (June 22nd). Well, if I am still in the mood for horror as I have been for the past 2 years, haha. But given everything, probably yes. I just cannot get enough of it. Funny, a lot of the times I will just be cruising through everything but now the constant is horror. Good that I got tons of horror to read and more that I want to read.

I found this one over at Tales From the Tombs, check out their post here.

Let’s get started!

1. Best horror book you’ve read so far in 2025

PHEW, that is a hard one. I read SO many of them. I got TEN 5+ plus starred books, aka TEN favourites so far this year. Picking one is evil. Sighs. I will go for a recent one then! This one, just as expected from Adam Ellis, terrified the fuck out of me and I loved each short story.

Let Me in Your Window by Adam Ellis, girl hiding from a big spooky eye looking in through a boarded window

2. Best non-horror book you’ve read so far in 2025

These questions are all evil. I have quite a few favourites this year. ARGH. OK, I will pick one. I will go with this amazing, heartbreaking, made me cry, beautiful book and gorgeous cover:

Het laatste jaar by Matt Goodfellow, boy with big wings stretching to the top of the cover on the school playyard

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

Do you have a minute? Or twenty? I got a lot of books that I desperately need. But they are expensive/not easily found/insert another reason. But OK, here is one of them. Stinetinglers. I really loved the first 3 books and I am desperate to get my hands on this 4th book of him. I cannot wait to see what kind of weird/strange/horrifying/scary tales we get in this one.

Stinetinglers 4 by R.L. Stine, black girl looking in the mirror and shocked at how distorted she looks

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Well, I haven’t exactly gone searching for November or December books that much, so I will pick one from October. And that is going to be this one! Mostly because of the cover, but also because of the kick-ass blurb!

Hazelthorn by C.G. Drews, person popping out of the thorns with thorns over their eyes

5. Biggest disappointment

HA, this was easy. Well I guess the biggest disappointments would be my DNFs but I don’t keep track of those. But thankfully I do have books I did read that were a disappointment. And one of them is this one. Rated 0.5 stars and wow, what a piece of crap this one was. This year I read a ton of Junji Itou, and this has been the worst of all books. The characters were weird/horrible, the story was all over the place and enormously WTF am I reading. This was the manga that told me I should stick to Junji Itou’s short story collections instead.

Remina by Junji Ito, red cover with a red planet coming to the city down below

6. Favourite adaptation of the year

I haven’t yet really watched any adaptations of things. I am planning on watching The Summer Hikaru Died. I read the first volume of it (and will be reading the second one soon) so I am curious if the anime is going to be as unsettling as the manga.

7. Favourite new author (debut or new to you)

Norm Konyu! Hands-down. I came across his books this years and I have been devouring them. I am now eagerly waiting for more!

8. The most-haunting book so far

This one! This one is still haunting me since I read it in June. It was a spooky tale with lots of red flags and there are plenty of moments you just want to grab the MC and get her out of there.

Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson, flowers along with a girl with half of her muscles/blood and the other normal skin

9. Newest favourite character

Sam Montgomery from A House with Good Bones!

10. A book that made you cry

I am sure there were a couple, but I would have to go through my reviews to know if there were any horrors that I read that also made me cry.

11. An underrated book you’d recommend

I guess I will just say any Wendy Dalrymple book! Her books don’t have a lot of ratings on Goodreads. She is an amazing author and her books are always fun, terrifying, scary, sleep what is that, and more.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year

I think I will have to go with a recent one!

You Are the Detective The Creeping Hand Murder by Maureen Johnson + Jay Cooper, red cover with a very stabby hand

13. What five books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Well, I got more than 5, but let’s see! These 5! Though I kinda hope to get them read during Spooktober~

Beta Vulgaris by Margie SarsfieldStrange Houses by Uketsu with a red cover with a floor planPyramidia by Stephanie Sanders-Jacob, pink cover with a cup of tea on it with blood on the sideSomething in the Walls by Daisy Pearce, ripped apart wallpaper showing the wall behind itWe Came to Welcome You by Vincent Tirado, group of people with one of the people holding a pie
