Review: A House with Good Bones

A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher, doorknocker skull surrounded by roses“Vultures are extremely sensitive to the dead. Particularly when the dead are doing things they shouldn’t be.”

🌹 Sam was such a fun character and I loved that, despite the crazy and scary things that keep happening, she sticks around. For her mom. I loved how she stood up for her mom, asked her to take down things. Try to get her mind away from things. I loved seeing them watch shows together and drink wine.
🌹 I loved that Sam’s job was aerchaeoentomologist. Aka, someone who studies insects in archealogical digs. That was such a fun job, I can not remember anyone else in the many books I read have that job.
🌹 The haunting/the scary stuff that happened more and more? I loved every moment. Thanks for the nightmares by the way, haha. Grandma’s antics got progressively more scary. First it was just small things, like things falling, or sounds. Then it was something touching Sam while she slept (NOPE), then the plants started doing things (NOPE).
🌹 It was great to get more deets on not just grandma but also on the family. On grandma’s father for instance who had some hobbies that cough may not be the healthiest ones to have. It added a new layer to the story. At first it seems just to be about grandma haunting the place, but with these extra details it makes it more layered. More dangerous.
🌹 I loved the parts between chapters that told us more about various varieties of roses. It was just such a nice touch to add to a story about a crazy grandma and her love for roses.
🌹 The vultures! Oh man, those made the story way creepier and I love it! I love that with each new thing happening in the house more and more vultures appeared.
🌹 Phil x Sam. Romance in horror or at least hints to two people liking each other more than just acquaintances can be hit or miss. I can tell you that it was a hit in this one. I loved seeing Phil and Sam together and I had such a giggle at how cutely awkward Sam was at times and what she blabbered at times. I was definitely rooting for the two of them to get together when everything was over.
🌹 Gail was such a fun addition to the book. I loved her attitude, I loved Hermes, I loved seeing how despite everything she did try to help out.
🌹 The last part of the book when everything just BOOM escalates and shit hits the fan hard. Those parts had me totally on the edge of my seat, or well, I believe it was more huddling in my bed and hiding under the covers, haha. Those bits were so scary and terrifying. Mostly because of what crawls around in the ground, yeah nope.

I could probably chat on and on about this book as I had so much fun and it terrified me so, but let’s end it here. This was a fantastic book and I would highly recommend it to all in need for a fright. You will definitely look at gorgeous roses in a different way, haha.

Star rating, 5 stars
