Review: Horror Collector, Vol. 6: The Disappearing Dog

Horror Collector, Vol. 6 The Disappearing Dog by Midori Sato + Yon + Norio Tsuruta, boy holding a book with a dog next to him in a yellow raincoatSix new stories including the continuation of the main story, Horror Collector is back! This time with one of my favourite urban legends. Bloody Mary!

I was curious to see if Jimmy and Fushigi would get together again and if they are able to settle things, Jimmy being honest. Fushigi open to what Jimmy has to say.

The Ubazakura Legend: Star rating, 3.5 stars I loved the legend, I loved the spookiness of it all, but it was just a bit chaotic with how it was told. Normally we get to see the urban legend from the POV of someone and then later on Fushigi/Jimmy join. Now it was a mix of Jimmy trying to help out along with bits of a spooky ghost and a tree and what that tree is (which was terrifying). I am also happy that Fushigi came along, but we also get to see the guy with the blue umbrella again and his ominous words (seriously, the guy thrives on chaos it seems) that may or may not be true (if only Jimmy confided in Fushigi).

Bloody Mari: Star rating, 4.5 stars A bit of a twist on the story given that she is called Mari! It took me a while to connect the dots but when Miku got to Rima’s place I just KNEW (and it took me this long because I am used to it being spelled with an Y). It was a dark story, especially Mari’s origin story which I just found so sad. It got quite creepy and I loved the vibe of the story. This can definitely go on the list of favourite Bloody Mary stories.

Deadly Sleep Talk: Star rating, 3.5 stars This one started off quite normal and I was wondering what kind of deadly thing would happen when you talk back to someone sleep talking. Well, you know those GIFs of a ghost girl crawling but with her face/belly up? That is this. And the illustrator added an illustration, so um, thanks for the nightmares. Haha. This got so spooky, and also a tad sad when we find out why the ghost went after our MC. I will definitely not be interrupting anyone when they sleep talk. No thank you.

The Devil’s Chord: Star rating, 3.5 stars While this was a spooky tale, what if a curse took over the Going Home song (you know the one if you read plenty of manga/seen anime) and turned the adults into something very dangerous? First just some scolding but quickly going much further. It was good, but at times I was just mostly rolling my eyes at the parents/adults. It reminded me a lot of those sillier Goosebumps stories.

The Bottomless Swamp: Star rating, 4 stars OK, this was pretty dang scary. If you ever see a group of people heading somewhere and looking weird, don’t follow. Or you may end up like the sisters in this story. With the younger one dragging along the older one to figure out what the group of people is doing and then getting caught in something spooky. I also love that no one else could see the ghosts, that made it more scary. You would read about how dad was getting home and behind him, invisible only to the sisters, are the four guys that are out to get them because they saw something they shouldn’t have.

The Dog-Killing Bridge: Star rating, 3.5 stars This is both the main connecting story as well as an urban legend. I wasn’t always a fan of this one, but I did have fun nonetheless. I am happy it was about Jimmy and that he and Fushigi finally talked. Not just about Jimmy’s transformation and worries, but also about what he learned from the blue-umbrella-guy. It took a bit long, but I am happy and sad at the same time how it ended. MOMO though, urgh, she is just so frustrating, I have a feeling that she is affiliated with Himitsu and that blue-umbrella-guy. We will see in the next volume!

So all in all, this was a good volume, though less fun then the previous ones. The urban legends were at times scary but not too scary, plus the whole conflict/main connecting story just frustrated me as it has been going on WAY too long and it just got bland/boring/annoying. I will still get the next volume, but maybe I will first check out a preview before I do.

Star rating, 3.5 stars
