Shinrei ni naranai Netto Keijiban Hyaku Monogatari Toshi Densetsu Komikku Kaidan-shuu, Vol.1 by various authors, guy sitting in a chair with a room full of scary stuffA spooky wooky anthology featuring creepy pasta turned manga, this terrified me!

I was looking around for some horror to read in July (I could have scheduled this one for earlier but I thought it would be fab to feature it for Spooktober) and I encountered this one! I just loved the covers and decided to check it out. And I can tell you… I want more!

In this delightful anthology we get 5 spooky tales of horror. All of them from popular stories from the internet, aka creepypasta. I have to say I don’t know any, but I am guessing these are specific to Japan. I am kinda curious about the origins so I will be sure to check out the internet to see if I can find something, if they are really popular I am sure I can find something. I always love it when books make me want to research/find out more.

So back to the book. 5 stories! We start with a seriously gruesome one featuring a dream about a monkey train. A girl who has had lucid dreams before thinks nothing about it… but when people start dying and she is almost next… well you can imagine. This one freaked me out so badly, because it is a dream, but apparently one you a) cannot run from b) you can die from it. Next up we have a guy going into a scary village, this was more disturbing/eww rather than truly scary like the first one. Next up a boy who is staying with his uncle at a cabin and he is warned not to go to the mountain but we all know what kids are like so when he gets a chance to at least take a peek at things… well this one was scary but also disgusting. Next up two people (a couple) who find a rifone (had to look it up) and the woman gets addicted to it… what happens next was crazy, scary, and OMG NOPE, I loved the facial expressions in this one, plus the ending, teehee. The next one was SO GOOD, I think it was definitely my favourite of the bunch even if it was just a part 1 (the first short story with more coming). About a woman in the now having to go back to her hometown and what happened during her teens there. I would have aborted that mission as soon as I felt that hand on me, yup, bye. As you can see, I kept it mostly vague, haha, you will have to check it out to see what happens in each stories, but I can guarantee you will be frightened. This is one series I will keep on reading! I am happy with this collection, most of the stories are one shot and they definitely do feel that way, I have had issues before with short stories that it felt either crammed in or things were missing, but with these stories they were just the perfect length, a perfect scary snack to devour (and have nightmares, thanks).

The art, well each story was by someone different so we get different art styles. My favourite would be the first and the story about the boy in the mountain though the eyes were very Junji Itou. The last story had the best story yes, but the art just didn’t always work for me.

All in all, a perfect read for Spooktober so I would recommend it! If you have the chance, check it out.
