Review: We Used to Live Here

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer, picture of a house but in slices and they don't match“There was an unusual heaviness to the dark down here, as if it were soaking up the light, hoarding it away for some unknown purpose.”

One of my must-have reads and it was as good as I had hoped!

😍 The story starts off innocent enough with a woman alone in her new house and a strange family at her door. I wouldn’t have let them in, but we see that Eve has some trouble with saying no, she likes to make people happy even if that leads to scary/not so fun situations for herself. But as the story continues and the family doesn’t leave, we see that things are changing. There are things changing in the house, but also outside of that. Things that Eve thought were normal are changing. Little items, her girlfriend, she is missing things, there are spooky things happening. It was disturbing. Especially since you didn’t know what was real. Was Eve hallucinating it all? Or was something seriously sinister happening? I loved that it got darker and darker with each page and I was just not able to stop. I just had to know what was going on.
😍 The spooky things in the house? Thanks for the nightmares dear author. That thing in the basement, the girl in the hospital hallway that appeared at times, the attic stuff.
😍 Oh, and afterwards when you get the whole picture, which made that thing that Jenny said at the start make even more sense and I was just gasping at how genius it was to just drop that little nugget. At that time it may seem like nothing, but then later. OMG.
😍 I loved the little morse codes scattered throughout the book and what sentence they gave in the end. shivers Not to mention we also get some strange glyphs and I am still curious if those mean anything, so that is a project still to be done.
😍 I love that this wasn’t just one story to follow, there are two ways this story is told. In the normal chapters we follow Eve as strange things starts happening after she let in people in her home. In the typed chapters we get stuff about things not appearing as they are, strange notes about a house (which is clearly Eve’s new home), forum stuff, information on various psychological stuff like what happens when many people say x item existed but there is no proof of it, interviews, and more. It was so gosh darn interesting and I loved it.
😍 Thomas and his family, yuck! They were perfect villains. Or well, especially Thomas. They started off nice, but quite soon after there were just moments that had me shaking my head, wondering what the heck is up, wondering why they wouldn’t leave.
😍 I loved finding out more about the Thomas, the family that lived in this house before. I loved that we didn’t find out immediately but slowly as the story continued.
😍 Shylo was such a good doggo, I loved her! Charlie, the girlfriend, I am still not sure how I felt about her. I think that is mostly because we see things from Eve’s POV. I think if I had Charlie’s POV I would have thought differently about her.
😍 The ending was just such a shocker! I just wanted to step in and protect Eve. To be there for her and help her out. I wonder how things will go when she is out of that place. Will she go back to the house?
😍 And then there is the last typed message which had me gasping and crying. I won’t spoil anything, but that just broke me.

All in all, this was a ride and I would HIGHLY recommend this one to everyone in need for a book that will have you on the edge of your seat, confused and gasping when revelations happen, and a book that will scare you.
