Review: Ringette Girl

Review: Ringette Girl

Ringette Girl by Sara Visser, Alyse Mercey, group of kids in pink shirts and holding hockey equipment standing on iceI received this book from Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

I have never heard of Ringette, though going by the cover I thought it would be something like (ice) hockey? Either way, I was very curious about this book!

In this one we meet a girl (the one in the middle of the cover) who is going to a Ringette game. She is all ready, big breakfast, big energy, tons of excitement. Since I had absolutely no clue what Ringette, I was excited to finally get to see what it was. Apparently it is a sport with a stick and rings? And you gotta shoot the rings into the goal. The book shows us the game from the start to the finish so we get details on passes, a couple of moves, and how to score. I definitely would love to do this sport, but I guess given I never heard of it, it doesn’t exist in my country. Haha. Either way, I was 100% into the game and I was rooting for the girls! It was just so much fun!

I do think it was a shame that there were no education materials. I would guess they are about Ringette? I would have loved to get more information. I mean, again, the book shows us most of how it works and how a game is played, but I wanted more than that, some real life information. Guess I gotta check Google/Duck Duck Go to get more information.

The illustrations were a lot of fun. I love the colours, and I love how well the illustrator showed the game. It makes things much clearer. Plus, I like that the teams are all pretty diverse.

All in all, I still need to read more about this sport, but this was a fun picture book and I love that the team was all girls! Recommended!
