Review: What Happens in Amsterdam
π·THAT COVER! So swoony and cute!
π·That it takes place in Amsterdam. A gorgeous city though I am not visiting anymore, it just got way too busy and commercial/touristy for my likes. But I loved reading about the city, about the museums, about the food, about the markets, and more.
π· I loved getting flashbacks to 13 years ago when these two were 17 and just met and their whirlwind romance.
π· Loved LOVED the Dutch words peppered throughout the book, as a Dutchie I was just so delighted to see those.
π· I also loved seeing Danika learn Dutch and see Wouter help her out. And see Danika grow more confident in using the language.
π· Marriage of convenience turning to more? I saw that coming, I mean these two had such chemistry and I was just rooting for them to get together, talk it out, and reconnect. Make it all real. Plus, there is of course the whole history these two had (and some misunderstandings that they just had to talk out).
π· Phoebe, Iulia, and Roos, all three of these were fabulous characters. Phoebe is Danika’s sister and I just adore their bond and how they manage to find a way to keep chatting despite the distance. Iulia is a new friend Danika meets when she moves to Amsterdam to the (as I would call it) dungeon basement, and she is just so sweet and fun. Roos is Wouter’s sister and I just love how she accepted Danika in her midst.
π· That Danika has asthma. I have asthma myself and so I was delighted to see a character with the same as me.
π· Wouter x Danika. OH MY GOSH. Those two had SUCH chemistry.
π· Iula x Roos. I saw you two flirting. I built a ship and it is setting sail! WHOO WHOO! And yes, I would love a book with just the two of them!
π· Danika is so cool with how she keeps on trying even when things aren’t going the best ways. Though yes, I wanted to hug her as she could definitely use one given she feels inferior.
π· The sex scenes! WOW!
π· How they met again, haha, typical Dutch ways. Just crash into each other on bike.
π· When things imploded I was so worried we would get some dumb drama. But NOOOOOO. Dani just has a think, and then talks. Talks. Talks. To her family. To Wouter’s family. And the best part of all and that one fucking made me cry, to Wouter. In her way. I was just crying when Dani said ik hou van jou to Wouter. It was just so beautiful and I am so happy with this. Thank you so so much dear author for not going for a third-act-break-up bullshit, but instead having mature people and have them talk.
π· Near the end when they said all the places they visited I was like OMG you went there? JELLY! I know that bookstore and it is a dream of mine to visit! Plus, all the other places I recognised as well. Proud Dutchie here!
π Danika’s parents were so toxic and hurtful. I get it, your kid was a preenie, I get it your kid has asthma. But she is now an adult. Knows how things work and otherwise will figure it out. People need to make mistakes to learn. You cannot just TIE her up and hold her in Los Angeles for her life. She wasn’t happy. I am glad they talked and that they managed to think about things, but seriously, she is 30. She doesn’t need to keep you up to date on every thing. She doesn’t need to be tracked.
π I didn’t like what Danika said when her parents found out. She really needs to stop downplaying things. I get that it was a stressful situation, but I felt for Wouter.
π€ That is now how stampot works. You don’t just yeet every kind of vegetable in one pot. Maybe the author meant it as these can be used for stampot but for me it was like whut you are putting kale and carrots/onions and such together? EWW? No.
All in all, WOW, what a book! I was swallowed up by this one, it was so addictingly fun. Highly recommended!
