Review: Hunger’s Bite

Hunger's Bite by Taylor Robin, a black face taking a bite with on the fork and what is on there three peopleA warm welcome to a cruise… be sure to strap in because there is going to vampires, demons, and other spooky things going bump!

While I was browsing BlueSky I encountered this book and of course I had to get it! The art looked amazing and I loved the whole idea of a cruise going horribly wrong~

In this one we meet a girl named Neeta, she has big dreams of travelling and discovering the world. She wants to see it all! I love seeing her read things, discover new worlds. And I love that she was determined. That she was going to get to the bottom of things even when things get scary/hairy and terrifying. I love her finding a friend in Wick (our fancy-smancy vampire with his yellow umbrella) and I had oodles of fun seeing the two of them discover what was up in the cruise and figure out a way through that and also some life stuff. These two were definitely my favourite characters. I loved finding out more about Wick, about the agency he works at, about how can move around through the cruise, and more.

It got spooky, weird, and I just flew through it. I loved seeing what was going on on the cruise and what happened to people (nothing good, I can tell you that). I also love seeing things descent slowly into madness/scariness. At first you think people are just tired and then stranger things happen. I was shocked how far the evil guy was going to get to his goals (I almost wrote coals there, which would be appropriate I guess). He had his sight set on things and wasn’t going to let anyone stand between him and that. I love it when evil guys are truly evil. Plus, he was also very creepy, in a gets under your skin creepy. Love!

I wasn’t a fan of Emery, not even at the end. He really came across as a 3-year old who didn’t understand that humans aren’t possessions.

And in that way the book is also about privilege, about female/male stuff. Like how Neeta got education and has a place to stay whereas her brother has to work in kitchen/serving. Or how Emery just doesn’t seem to get friendship/life.

Oh, and sorry to Pleasance, I thought you were a dude. Haha. I was all like, ohhhh m/m romance? YES! And then we find out Pleasance is a girl. Sorry Pleasance!

The ending was nice and it made me quite happy, though the last page, I need to know more deets! I want more of this world! Give me!

The art was really good and I love the style. The character designs were fabulous and I love how the crew was shown to be under the weather. Or how the rich people got fragmented/strange. It was just perfection!

All in all, I would highly recommend this book to everyone looking for a supernatural cruise going way wrong.
