Review: The September House
“This wasn’t my first time trying to prepare a meal while dodging the fangs of a dead child who wished me bodily harm.”
It took me a while but I finally was able to get this book during Spooktober this year! And boy, what a freaking ride!
💀 Margaret was such an interesting character, she is fine with the home as it is, even when it is severely haunted. And so the question comes up, is it all real or is it all in Margaret’s head? I love myself unreliable narrators, well provided they are written well. And I just love Margaret. Throughout the book you can see things going wrong, but is it all happening, is the house truly haunted by Master Vale and the numerous ghosts or is Margaret just losing it? And why isn’t she actively searching for her husband?
💀 As the story unfolds we learn more about Margaret and Hal. About their relationship when they bought the house, how things went sour as the Septembers went on, the terrible thing that happened in the third year they were there, but also about earlier parts, how they met, how they were together. Why did Katherine have to leave when she was a kid? Why is Margaret so adapt at some situations and what to say do in them? Why doesn’t she have friends? Why is she estranged from her sister? And so more and more, and as we got deeper into that rabbit hole I just wanted to cry. It was wonderfully done and I love that this was added as it gave more depth and extraness to the spooky haunted house tale.
💀 I love that this isn’t just your average 365/24/7 haunted house. From what we learn the house is mostly OK to live in during the non-September months. Sure, there are still ghosts and things still get creepy, but September is hell month. Blood flowing from the walls, ghostly children pointing to the cellar, the cellar needing a new blessing, the ghost acting more erratic and strange, and more. You just have to get through it. You know what, I would have just moved out for that month. Fuck it. If the other months are OK to be there then why stay in hell month?
💀 The ghosts were so awesome. We got a whole slew of them. Including one ghost who is just the sweetest and helps Margaret out. I think Master Vale still terrified me the most because he was in the cellar and the main cause for things to go so terribly wrong, not to mention when we meet him it is just a FUCK NOPE AND RUN AWAY (he is that scary), but the children’s ghosts terrified me the most after that. With how they just appeared. Pointed. Guts pouring out or parts missing. shivers
💀 Katherine… well not my favourite but she grew on me eventually (though I hope she learns to deal with her anger, when your mom is afraid of you and calls you a certain name you should temper it down). I mean at points I could see where she is coming from, but at other times she was just too much. I just wanted to give her a nice slap.
💀 The last part was just a fucking ride I was like OMG so it is THAT and then I was just yeeted around because NOPE. It was just amazing and I can only applaud the author for writing it so well. Just when you think it is all that suddenly a lot of things happen and I definitely had nightmares because of the things there.
💀 The cover is also so cool! I love the house just there in red (blood?).
💀 The many twists and turns, each time you think you may know it all and something new is yeeted in your face. It keeps you on your toes!
All in all, I loved this one so much. It was strange, it was a fever dream, it was terrifying, and I loved it all. So many twists and turns. Recommended!
