Review: Unicornia: Learning to Fly

Unicornia Learning to Fly by Ana Punset, Diana Vicedo, pink cover with a girl in striped shirt and fluffy skirt standing on a cloud with a rainbow behind herA cute children’s book about a new town full of magic, unicorns, and friendship~

I have had my eyes on this adorable series for a while and it seems that one of my libraries is finally adding it to their collection!

Meet Claudia. She is an adorable girl who has recently moved to a place called Unicornia. It is where the unicorns lives, magic rules, and everything is sparkly. She is about to start a new school and as you can imagine she is both excited and worried. Excited because she is going to learn new things like magic, but worried because there are also flying lessons and other things that she doesn’t know about. I instantly took a liking to Claudia. She was a sweet girl and I liked how she tried her best. I could also understand her hesitation when facing with flying lessons. I mean, I would also be terrified, though for me it is mostly the fear of heights, haha. At times I wanted to step in the book and tell her it would be fine! Thankfully, Claudia quickly makes two friends, girls who are also in her class, and I just loved seeing the friendship, it was as if this trio never had been anything else other than a trio. They just clicked so well together, and I loved seeing the two girls take Claudia under their wing. Show her around + help her with her unicorn flying problem. It was so fun!

I loved reading about Unicornia and I wish I could visit! It sounds like such a fun place. I adore that we got a little map of the place (though I am guessing it is of course much bigger than just what we saw). Plus, I need a backpack like Claudia has. I always get too many books from libraries and this would be perfect.

And just like many books like this (for instance Isadora Moon) the book is in a specific colours Not just black/white, but lots of pinks as well. I am curious if the next book will be another colour given that the next has a greenish cover.

Now for some things that didn’t make sense. How did Claudia’s family come to live in Unicornia. No one knows about that world, and they got a store/shop now in this world. Did they have family here? Was there a secret note somewhere? I would love to have learned more about this.

And then there is how the teachers all expected Claudia to be up to date with everything. As if she had been here for her whole life, but they know that this girl hasn’t been that long in Unicornia, has lived in the normal world for her life, and expect her to know all about potions, flying, and more. Not even caring about instructing her or giving her a small private lesson before everything. Instead Claudia has to rely on her friends to help her out. Because teachers are already talking about moving her down a class. Like, hello, if you at least help her, give her basics, she will pick up soon enough.

But all in all, I had a lot of fun and I flew through the book! I need more of this series and see what other fun adventures Claudia and her friends have! Recommended!

    1. It is! The illustrations are just as cute! I still hope to read the rest of the series, hoping the libraries either get them in Dutch or English soon~
