Review: What Stalks the Deep
“That is very horrifying and I want to go home,” I said, although I pronounced it, “Ah. I see.”
The newest Sworn Soldier book and this time we are going to America and to the mines. Yup. Get your claustrophobia up we are going into the dark!
In this one Alex gets a letter from his friend Denton (it took me a little bit to figure out who he was again) and of course Alex decides to head to America. He cannot let his friend face whatever it is alone. I love that Angus came along as well!
I really loved seeing Alex again, see them talk about their past, about their feelings, seeing them bravely try to figure things out (though all they wanted was to run away, which I could definitely understand, haha). Alex is such a fun character. Then there is Angus, grumpy but loyal Angus who at times made me laugh. There is Dr. Denton and his companion (on that note wink wink nudge nudge). The author really writes these characters well.
I loved the letters/telegrams that Denton shows us before going to the mines. They set the tone for the book.
The mines were terrifying. Claustrophobic. Dangerous. I mean, there are so many kinds of damps and they are deadly in more than one way. Explosions anyone? Not to mention the cave ins, the squeezes (and I say that the way Alex says them), the tunnels. Add to that a missing man, a glowing red light, things that reflect faces in a bad way, and you got yourself a terrifying time. And I loved every moment. I was glad that we did go out of the mines at times (either running or just deciding today was enough), I needed a breather as well. And I am not one to really get claustrophobic but this book definitely made me feel that way. Thank you to the author!
What was lurking in the mines? Or at least one of it. Well, I have to say it spooked me, but I was also very intrigued, especially as we got to know them better. Learn more about them. I could definitely understand that people were hesitant to trust them, but I am happy with how things progressed.
I loved how it all came together and how we found out what was lurking in the dark, or well, who the big baddie was. Because we already found out earlier what was lurking in the dark, what was in the mines. But there is sometimes else around that is both inside the mines and outside and causing havoc and terrible things. As the we got closer to the identity I had a big suspicion on who/what it was, still kinda hoping I was wrong of course. When Alex and the rest find out a very exciting part of story happens and I was on the edge of my seat reading. It was scary, dark, gruesome, and I was so worried for the cast.
All in all, WOW, this was so spooky and good! I cannot wait to see what is next for Alex and his companions, I am looking forward to it!
