Review: King Winter’s Birthday
What happens when King Winter wants a big birthday bash with his family? A really fun picture book, though a bit depressing.
I came across this one at the library in English but I had so much fun with it that I want to write an English review for it on here~ So hi!
In this book we meet King Winter. You all know him. He is the one bringing winter, celebrating the season. His birthday is coming up and he wants to celebrate it not like he normally does. Which is being all alone. He wants to have a party with his siblings. Yup. Say hello to Queen Spring, Queen Autumn, and King Summer (who all look fabulous btw). The trio hurry over to their brother to celebrate, which I loved. But of course I knew that trouble would be afoot. I mean, all 4 seasons together in one kingdom? And we see our seasons having a blast celebrating, enjoying being together again, but in the real world things are getting chaotic. Spring happens and then it is summer and then it is autumn and oh yes here is some snow, and sometimes it is just everything in one go. Everything is getting in a fritz. The seasons are just not meant to be together and my heart broke for the siblings. They just want to be together but they are not allowed. And that is why despite having fun with the story and loving the way the seasons are portrayed, I think it was also very depressing. That last page? It just made me so sad.
The art was really pretty, though I have to say the faces everywhere creeped me out a bit.
Oh, and I love that his siblings weren’t just all white as they often are portrayed in books/etc.. Instead Summer and Autumn are brown/Black.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I hope that our siblings find a way to still celebrate together without throwing the world in chaos (can someone give them a phone or something, haha).
