Review: Sayuri
I received this one from the publisher (Kodansha/Vertical) on Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.
👻 The haunting was creepy. Sure, over the top/weird, but still a good one that surely did bring goosebumps to my arms. There were some scenes that were very haunting + I love how it played with the dark/nightmares, with fears.
👻 You are never safe, nowhere in house. Sometimes with hauntings you would be safe in for instance a room or a part, but in here it is all just you are fucked.
👻 How people either died, got crazy, or just disappeared. It was crazy, gruesome, sad.
👻 Norio’s classmate who could see things. I really enjoyed her and that she became a bigger part of it all. I loved that despite her taking a distance (which to be fair I could very much understand) she still thought of him and tried to ask about him. And then later taking a bigger step.
👻 That we got glimpses of what happened to Sayuri back in the past. That poor girl. It doesn’t make it good what she did to the new inhabitants (I mean, I would have just stuck like glue to the parents/family, we know she can do that as Norio’s classmate clearly said that Norio had a lady following him). But I could understand her rage. And I guess seeing people be happy in a house you got so many bad memories of must have been hard. Still, girl, get your revenge with your parents.
👻 What grandma did to get rid of Sayuri/make her disappear (it was over the top, but dang). Plus, how she motivated Norio to stay healthy, eat, get stronger.
😬 I am still confused about the cover. That doesn’t really look like Sayuri. We barely see her in the story and if we do she looks scary/creepy/weird with black hair and that such. Not this still creepy but not that creepy girl.
😬 The story at times just didn’t click with me. Or the pacing felt off. Either way, I at times had to read back or take a moment to figure things out.
😬 The art didn’t always work for me. At times I had a hard time with who is who with the characters, and some characters looked even creepier than the freaking ghost.
😬 What is up with the tv and why is it spooky? I would have liked that to be explored more because now I was just OK, the tv is spooky.
😬 Didn’t like that grandma magically got cured of her dementia/Alzheimer to kick ghost butt (though she did get it back later). That is not how that works and as someone close to someone with Alzheimer this felt bad. My dad just cannot get cured. Not by the magic of willpower or whatever.
😬 The fuck did they all stay? I would have, after the first one that had gone, just said heck no and left. Sorry to the dad and how he bought the house for the family to be together and all that, but is it really worth that much?
😬 Not to mention the whole they weren’t strong (the ones in the family who were lost) but it is OK we can kick the ghost’s butt for them which just made me feel icky.
So yeah, all in all, not my favourite of the year. I am not sure if I would recommend it. For some points, sure, for the rest, nah.
