Review: The Great Puptective
A grumpy cat versus a very eager puppy! A delightful graphic novel!
I was so happy when back in December I was at Library #1 and encountered this one! I really wanted to get this one but just hadn’t had the time yet. Now I could! And today I am sharing my review for this adorable and hilarious book!
This graphic novel consists of various short stories about Truffles and Poppy. A bit like a chapter book but now with a graphic novel. Very cute! We see how the owner of Truffles leaves the animal shelter with a box and gives it to Truffles. What it is? A very eager and happy puppy named Poppy. Poppy isn’t the brightest bulb, but she is adorable. Well, for us, the reader, Truffles, a very grumpy tabby isn’t having it. Truffles loves long naps, pooing in the flower beds, eating. Poppy loves mysteries and will try to drag Truffles along. I really loved Truffles reaction when instead of something fun he got a puppy in his life. It made me laugh!
Throughout the book we see Truffles try to sabotage Poppy/get her in trouble. But as we all know from our favourite cartoons (at least my favourite cartoons) when we were kids it never works out, only leads to more hilarity. I have to say I never felt a real menace, I am making Truffles sound real mean, but he wasn’t. He just wasn’t sure what to do about this over the top puppy with very little braincells. And we see that he, as the story continues, doesn’t feel too happy about what he is doing. Yup. Truffles and Poppy are starting to bond. I really liked Truffles and to be honest I could definitely understand where he is coming from. How would you feel if your life was all calm and peace and suddenly a tornado just flew through it all?
Poppy is an adorable little puppy, a tad annoying, and very dumb. I mean, this little puppers is ready for a mystery but doesn’t know which mystery. When she is trailing a trail through the house she thinks she is onto a crime. When Truffles tries to show her she only thinks it is more mystery. Yup. Poppy is a very special puppy. But I love her determination and I love how eager she is to find a mystery and to solve it.
I think my favourite story is the last one with the blanket thief (aka Truffles). I love seeing Truffles really get that realization on how he feels about Poppy and I love the Rube Goldbergmachines he made.
I also love the little references throughout the book, as someone who has read Alina Tysoe’s work since Beanie it was a lot of fun.
And the art was just so fun! I love the character designs, love the cuteness, love the colours!
All in all, I will have to get this one and the others as soon as I can for my own collection. Because I want more of this duo! So cute!
