Review: Forgive-Me-Not

Review: Forgive-Me-Not

Forgive Me Not by Mari Costa, two girls almost holding hands while lying on forest groundI received this book from Toppling Stacks Tour/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

In this book we follow two characters, Aisling a girl who thought she was just a princess, a girl with two loving parents. But she is something more, she is a changeling. And Forget-Me-Not who is the girl supposed to be the princess but she was stolen away and has lived a life of hardship and hurt. Those who know me know that I am not always a fan of enemies to lovers as sometimes the enemies part just gets too much (too hateful), and I have to say that is also what happened at the start of this graphic novel with Not (as she is often called). Not is, as expected, hurt and angry at the fact someone took her place and that she had to live such hardships. But I hated, no absolutely despised, that she turned that anger full force on Aisling. Aisling who didn’t even know she was a changeling. Who didn’t even know someone had lost something due to her existing. Aisling who is now going through the shock of finding out that she is not human and gets dragged in a scary new world. In the first part of the graphic novel I was appalled at how Not was. Again, I could understand, but maybe you should direct your anger at someone who DID the change. And I have to say I was worried that this would be the whole book, Not being a bitch. Aisling not knowing what is going to happen to her and feeling crap. But thankfully, as the story continues Aisling and Not seem to grow closer together. Not seems to mellow. Not seems to understand that Aisling may also be a victim in this one. And I started to really enjoy the story. I found myself rooting for both the girls.

And not just rooting for them to find their happy endings. But I also was noticing the chemistry between them. At first it is almost nothing, but as the story continues we see more and more sparks appear. And so I began also shipping them. Hoping that despite all the scary bits still to come that they would be able to figure things out, together. And I was hoping for a kiss. Or maybe more than one, haha.

I also loved that Aisling was a little wisp of a girl whereas Not was buff/bulky/big. That is one of my favourite romance tropes, size difference (often in height but I also love in weight/bulkiness/muscles, like a tough girl versus a softer girl).

The world we get to see was fabulous, but also at times terrifying. You had gorgeous moments with deer, wisps, flowers, but then spooky things would lurk and terrify me. Then again, that fits with this world as I have read many story about fae/fey world. There is a gorgeous side, but also a very dark side.

I loved seeing where the story was going and see Aisling get stronger about what she wanted. The latter part of the story really got tense and at times scary and at one point had me gasping and in tears. I was so worried. Would it end like this? But thankfully, I can tell you, and I don’t think it is a spoiler, there is a happy end. I won’t tell you what the happy ending entails, you will have to read the graphic novel, but I was crying even more.

Oh, and I cannot end this one without mentioning Fairweather. A tiny fae/faerie who takes care of Not. I really loved her character/personality.

The art was, as expected by Mari Costa, totally awesome and gorgeous. Oh, and I loved that at one point we got special sketches on the chapter pages and I found myself looking forward to those as they were telling us a story and I was curious how it would go!

All in all, I would highly recommend this one to all looking for a magical adventure story with great characters (well, OK, Not took a bit to like, but Aisling I loved immediately) and a romance you will ship.

  1. Great review! I was also a bit frustrated with Not at the beginning, but I could also understand how perhaps all the trauma that she experienced growing up in faerie turned her into someone who has to project so much hard-heartedness. I agree that I wished that she had projected it onto someone else, other than Aisling because the poor girl had no idea much less a choice in being switched at birth either. I loved how their story progressed though! I also loved the art sketches we got for the chapter breaks. It was very cute 🥰
