Review: Me and My Beast Boss, Vol.1
I didn’t expect to get so emotional while reading this one! I thought it was just cute comedy romance, but it was much more than that!
Welcome to a world in which humans are at the bottom of the food chain and the furrier you are the higher you rank. In this world we meet a human girl called Saki Oki works at a company when she gets called to her lion CEO’s office. She thinks she gets fired, but instead she is getting an upgrade. He wants her to be his private secretary. Yup! And as we quickly find out he may not have done it entirely because she is hardworking and has a good track record. He is also smitten by her. Yup!
This sounds pretty cute and fun right? Human girl? Working hard? Handsome Lion CEO? Smitten? But this gets quite dark. As I said in the first paragraph this is a world that judges you if you are human. You get treated like shit if you are human. And we find out that Saki has undergone a lot of abuse, physical and verbal, through her time in the office. She is very much traumatised. And we also see that this treatment continues because people don’t think she is worthy of being the CEO’s secretary which leads to some scary moments that had me reaching out to Saki and then punching whoever was saying or doing bad shit. I had not expected it go this dark or so emotional. Poor Saki. She deserves a good boss, someone who cares about her, who compliments her. But it will take a while. Throughout the volume we see her struggle with insecurities and worries. I love that our CEO is there for her and talks to her. Gives her pats on the head. Makes sure she is OK. And gets angry on her behalf.
But Saki isn’t all worrying and insecurities, she is also a kick-ass girl who continues working hard. Who tries to do her best. Who tries, in the first few days, not to run away from her big predator CEO (lions have that effect on humans) but show him she can do this. I love how she tries to win information on how to do her job the very best she can. Even talking to the CEO’s driver (and past secretary). Saki was such a wonderful character, but I hope she gains even more confidence and happiness as the story continues. I am rooting for her.
And I am also rooting for these two to get together. I mean, seriously, the CEO looks like a big baddie but he is actually a real softie. I love how he sees Saki. How he tries to woo her. It is sweet!
I have to say I am not entirely sold on the character designs of our Lion CEO. Most of the time it felt like a guy in a fursuit. I think what threw me off completely was the hands. He has HUMAN hands WITH FUR on them. It was as if someone was wearing fursuit gloves. Sometimes I could shut that mental image of, but quite a few times I was just thrown out of the story because of those weird ass hands. I get that they had to do something because with paws he wouldn’t be able to do much, but at least make it less fursuit, please.
All in all, I am loving this manga. It made me cry so many times and I am really shipping our CEO with his secretary. I hope that she is able to heal and that they can get together.
