Review: Ami Moon and the Galactic Peacekeepers, Vol.1

Ami Moon and the Galactic Peacekeepers 1 by Frances Lee, head of a girl in the clouds with various other characters around and on herI received this book from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I was very curious about this one, the sample I tried looked very colourful and fun and I was eager to get started. And in overall I had a good time, but there were some things that didn’t click for me. I will start with the good things first and then head to the not so good things.

I loved the introduction and how we the reader are becoming Peace Keepers and we get to see some records from another human, Ami Moon. The story isn’t told as one thing, instead we get short vignettes featuring missions, the trio having a good time and becoming fast friends, memories of Ami and how she misses her home and her mom, little diary bits. I thought that was quite a fun way to tell a story.

I loved the little crew featuring our human Ami, the shark alien Rosa, and Sumo a big bunny with red eyes. I loved seeing each of them have certain skills and work together to make mission work out. I loved seeing them get closer, have chats about Ami and Earth. And the addition of the A.I. they called M.O.M (for Ami) was also a sweet touch and I loved seeing the A.I. accompany them on missions and help them out by providing information.

The missions across the universe were also a lot of fun and the world was such a creative and fun one. From strange aliens to cute aliens. To scary missions with bullies to missions in which they have to figure out how to handle things and make sure things end peacefully. I wished I could come with them on their missions.

What I didn’t like is how it wasn’t that cohesive. I did like that they were little journal bits featuring some missions, but I would have liked an overarching plot as well. For example, one mission Rosa just went haywire at the end, and then the next mission it was all fine as if the event hadn’t happened. I was expecting at least to get more information on why Rosa just went so angry when she was fine the whole time. And sometimes we would get a mission and it would just end in a short bit without having had the idea that something really happened. Or how the cloud mission just felt like it could have go on for a bit longer. And then at one point they are on a new mission and our MC just talks about picking her nose and eating candy, and I just had a hard time following the actual mission because of that, thankfully after a while we just went back to only the mission. Plus, I would have so liked to see how Ami got to this other planet/other world, we do get a peek in the last pages, but it was still vague that I am still not sure if she went aboard or not.

But the art? That is where this one truly shines. The art and the visuals were very stunning and I loved it so much. It was just a feast for my eyes and that is also one reason why I am rating this one a bit higher.

All in all, a bit of a mixed bag. I had a lot of good times, but I was at times just confused and I would have liked to see a more cohesive story.
