Review: Victoria of Many Faces, Vol.1
Victoria (originally Chloe) wants a peaceful life away from spying and other things, will she get that?
I spotted this one up on ComicsPlus late February and just had to check it out. I was intrigued. A girl who is a spy retiring? Plus adopts a cute kid? Yes!
Meet Victoria, or Chloe. When she was just a tiny kid she was sold/taken away from her family to become a spy for a kingdom. Since then she has done many missions, spied all she could, learned all sorts of cool skills, is a master of disguises, but she also learned some harsh truths from the one she thought she could trust. I loved seeing Chloe/Victoria take her own life back and think of all the things she wants to do to have a good life without any bad things. But, as we all know, stopping with being a spy isn’t easy so I am curious to see how this will continue especially given the ending. I wonder if that will come to haunt Victoria in the next volume.
But for now let’s start with the start. As we meet Victoria we see her try to figure out a place to stay, a place to start her new life. She has selected Kingdom of Ashbury with gorgeous streets, merchants everywhere, and royalty who isn’t going for war but for defense and prosperity. Aka, a perfect calm spot to start something new. Though haha, I am sure that Victoria didn’t expect to find a little blond-haired girl on a bench all alone. And so we meet Nonna. A cute little girl whose mother has abandoned her. Now most people would help her out and then just leave, but not Victoria. Nonna reminds her of herself when she was that young and she doesn’t want anything bad happening to this little girl, she is taken by her. It was maybe a bit rushed to go from trying to figure out how to have a calm life to adopting a kid in just one day, but given how cute Nonna is I will accept it, haha.
I really loved seeing Victoria and Nonna get closer with each page and also see Victoria include her in her plans. Trying to find a place for them to stay. Find a job. Find people to trust. She really has a way with people. They really make a cute duo and I loved how Victoria taught Nonna all sorts of fun things. Like climbing trees like a ninja. Or doing a backflip. Or well anything else that Nonna wants to learn Victoria is more than willing to learn her. I had a laugh how when people asked about it Victoria just mentioned she was really a big tomboy, teehee. Yeah, totally not a spy or anything. No sirree. No spies here. Just tomboys! XD
Next to this we also have a dash of romance! When Victoria meets Nonna and takes her to the police (before she decided to keep this girl) she tackles a thief (yes with Nonna on her back) and attracts the attention of the Captain. He is a handsome man and he definitely has eyes for Victoria. I was definitely shipping them right from the start, they had such cute energy between them and I loved how Jeffrey was helping them out, trying to be there for her. And you know what, Victoria deserves a good romance, not a fake one for spy purposes but something just for herself. As the manga continues there are quite a few cute moments and I am just hoping that Victoria’s past doesn’t ruin what is building between them. Crosses fingers
The side characters (from the grumpy professor who isn’t that grumpy to the Dowager and others) are all great ones. I hope we see more of them in the next volumes (and I hope they accept Victoria when they learn of her past).
I really had fun with this one and I also love the art style! I am curious to see how things will continue and what will happen if Victoria’s secret comes out. I need more!
