Review: About A Place in the Kinki Region

About a Place in the Kinki Region by Sesuji, red/grey cover with a photograph of a place in Japangasp WOW, be prepared for a disturbing, scary ride of your life!

So this is going to be a very vague review and not too long but I do have to write something so more people discover this AMAZING AWESOME read that I read in April.

And I think I have found a niche in books that I enjoy. I have read books by Uketsu, I have read Catalog of Wonders, I have read Horror Collector, there is Grim Night Tales. All of those have one thing in common. One over-arching story and several short/mini stories told between with hints to what is going on + characters that reappear. The same is true for About a Place in the Kinki Region! In this one we meet a freelance writer who has an editor friend who has gone missing when he (and our freelance writer) were working on a big article about an area in the Kinki Region. Yup.

Throughout the story we see interviews happen by the freelance writer, we get to see chats between the friend and the freelance writer as they talk about the story that is slowly building up to something grand, but also a lot of short stories, news articles, messages from online, true stories, and more about that place in the Kinki Region. When you start you are totally blind. You have no clue what is going on exactly. You are just getting more and more terrified as the stories get more creepy. More disturbing. More WELL LET’S RUN. But as the story continues and we learn more and more about that Place in the Kinki Region you will start to GASP, go OMG OMG, flail, and see the puzzle pieces just click together. Certain elements will come back. Persimmons. A lady in red thumping up and down. A boy with tilted head (but is it really tilted???). And as the story continues everything will come together and it is just absolutely fucking brilliant. From ignorant OMG what is going on at the start to OMG oh no oh no oh heck nah with notes of OH YES as you near the end. It was such a delight to read this one and find out more about that spooky Place in the Kinki Region. A place you definitely don’t want to stay at or visit. Unless you are crazy. Or want to die. Or end up as a bride (and no this is not a good thing).

Oh, and the fourth wall being broken a few times? Yes, yes. This girl loves that!

I also loved the added illustrations (though I wish for more) though they terrified me to no end as I was reading this in the evening. Plus, I also love that extra materials part at the end. I was worried on opening it but when I got to it I noticed it was closed, you have to rip it open to get to see what it is inside. I won’t spoil it, but thank you author for more creepy vibes.

All in all, I would love more books by Sesuji! And I would highly recommend this book to all. Be prepared to get scared!
