Review: All of Us Murderers
“It came to something when you found yourself hoping that the footsteps you heard were ghosts.”
One of those books that drew me in with a cover and then a blurb and now it is my favourite book, haha. I had so much fun with this one and it just made me so happy.
😍 Before I get into the story I want to mention that I am so happy with the representation of ADHD. Those who know me know that I am generally very eh if there is ADHD (or autism) in books, I have it myself, and quite often it feels like all stereotypes just yeeted into a blender and then turned into a character. I recognise things from myself, but for most it just frustrates me and I often end up DNF-ing a book. But Zeb? ZEB is my baby. Each new thing about his ADHD had my heart singing. From him getting lost in books (or something he really enjoys) and having the utter concentration for that but being shit at concentrating on other things. Having a hard time with jobs. Him just having to go out to move. Moving his feet. Blurting out things/not always thinking before saying. Losing items. The only thing I don’t do is fidgeting with items. I have tried that but I just get bored of them in seconds, haha. And I also tend to keep things neat and tidy, though that is mostly just me trying hard and promising fun things to my head if we get things neatly. Dopamine shot coming up!
This quote: “Zeb was not a particularly logical thinker, at least in the commonly accepted sense. His train of thought didn’t generally chug from station to station in an orderly manner, taking him from A to B to C on the rails that other people would use. What he could do, now and then, was leap halfway down the alphabet, reaching conclusions in a single intuitive bound he often couldn’t explain.” That is so me. And there were so many other moments that I just loved Zeb. Not to mention all the rotten things he hears from his family and those around him? Hit me hard as those are exactly the same things I often heard (now less because I have a good support system now). I could probably go on, but Zeb, Zeb I love you!
😍 From the start I was just shipping Gideon and Zeb. Yup. I know, I know, things weren’t looking good and we learn what happened between them, but I was hoping that they would get back together, get that second chance. Because I could still see the spark underneath the loathing/the worrying/the sadness. And I loved it when things slowly moved into the right direction. I loved it when they talked. When they started communicating. It was a rocky start, but I was just cheering. I love it when character communicate and talk. Discover the truth, listen and think. And they had a lot of things to talk about.
😍 The sex scenes. They may not be what I expected to find in my horror/terrifying story, but I was all for it. Again, since the point above. The sex scenes were well written. I also love that they took time to cuddle and hug.
😍 The other characters, what a couple of twats. From Elise the sister in law who is not the worst but also not the best to Bram the older brother who is a total asshole and just loves money a bit too much to Hawley the playboy artist who just deserves a punch to Wynn the cousin who is controlling everything and who I wanted to punch more and more as the story continued. Then there is Jessamine who I am still not sure about. It definitely is a cast of characters that fit perfectly in the book that this is. A fight over an inheritance, seeing how far everyone will go to the point of throwing their own family in front of the inheritance bus to get them out of the way, they are toxic, evil, bad, and I love it. Not always are evil characters written in a way that I like it, but in this story, heck yes.
😍 The house itself and how spooky things got as the story continued. The house itself is already quite creepy with those lights flickering, shadows everywhere, and rooms in many places to the point of getting lost, but add to that a monk appearing, messages on walls, spooky sounds, and oh yes, no escape.
😍 Yep, because what we have here is a house with a wall around it and also tons of mist (and this is Dartmoor so you cannot just go out or you will drown). It was just perfect. It made the atmosphere even darker, even more scary, even more tense. I loved it!
😍 Learning more about the family, the strange things that happened, the bad things, and more.
😍 The cover! Yup. We are taking a small break from the inside of the book to praise the outside of the book, because DANG I love it so much!
😍 Back to the book! I loved how things slowly escalate as the story continued. Things really got more and more dangerous as the book continued and you find yourself rooting for Zeb and Gideon (the only two good guys) to survive this ordeal and get the fuck out. I really loved the latter part of the story when everything really ramps up and it is go go go go. Zeb made some dumb decisions, but I also kinda could see why he did it.
😍 I love an epilogue and I am really happy that the author added it!
😞 Could we please not call penises/dicks pricks, please. It just sounded so weird. I have never seen anyone call it a prick and it wasn’t sexy. Nope.
All in all, I could probably rave about this book for many many more hours but let me just stop here and tell you to READ THIS BOOK! GO GO GO!
