I flipped through my book and landed on page 85!
A  creaking step was the only answer. Jared would call out, so who or whatever I was dealing with wasn’t him. They likely had no idea where I was exactly, so I had the upper hand. The terror came with a rush of memories about Sam chasing me through the mansion with a knife in his hand. I stood out of sight at the top of the stairs, listening. Was that another footstep? I left the stake down my waistband. Since a vampire would have to be invited in, this was probably a human. A hard shove down the stairs was my best option.
I wanted so badly to look down the stairs, but I couldn’t risk showing myself. I inched up to the corner. The top step was also a creaker, so that would be my cue to move. I held my hand over my mouth, breathing quietly against it like all the girls in horror movies.
