A vast creature – with the head of an anglerfish and dozens of fins along its sinewy – is “swimming” in the sky over Eerie-on-Sea. It has two huge flippers, a low-slung mouth filled with tusks, and gigantic ichthyosaur eyes. The creature is wreathed in storm clouds and lightning  that seem to pour off its fins. It uses its giant flippers to smash the town to pieces, while lots of little medieval people run away.

My sister’s Dina’s last words were “I’m telling you, that hamburger tasted like it had boogers on it.”

My mother’s last words were “Tony, do you see that-”
My father’s last words were “Oh God – hold on, girls. Hold on!
Then the car plunged off the side of the road and sank darkly into a drainage canal full of icy slush. And poof! the Radegan family was finished.
Well, except for me.
Apparently I didn’t get the memo.

I had Random.org select a page, it picked 174. I decided to -1 because today is September 1st, and so the page today is 173.

Motherfugger, I curse to myself as I step carefully down the servants’ stairs. It comes out unbidden, strange and filthy in my mouth. And right all the same. This is why we have cursing. I never understood what made folk do it. But now I know. All our dire feelings stain the heart, and the stains bloom into curses. I don’t know how to sort this mess. The ways I’ve tried only put me in danger.
